Second example. A value is 9 less than twice a number. If the value is 31, write \(2n-9=31\). Then \(2n=40\), so \(n=20\).

How SAT answer choices try to trap you
- Intermediate values: an option may be a number you calculate halfway through.
- Wrong unit: minutes instead of hours, radius instead of diameter, percent instead of decimal.
- Sign errors: negative values often appear when a subtraction order is reversed.
- Nearby expression: the choice may give \(x\) when the prompt asks for \(2x+1\).
